SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS

Preferred 10mL (5mL) See Instructions Sterile Screwtop Container Refrigerated
Instructions Specimen types: Sputum, BAL, Bronch Wash, Tracheal Aspirate, Stool, Urine, or Gastric Aspirate.
Encourage deep cough to minimize saliva contaminants. Minimum 5 mL in screw top container. May be collected with routine or fungal culture if quantity is sufficient. For respiratory, 3 consecutive days; early morning specimens are recommended. Minimum volume for urine is 40mL.
Gastric lavage/aspirate minimum volume is 5-10 mL.
Stability: Transport specimens as soon as possible for optimal recovery.
Unacceptable: Specimens in non-sterile containers, swabs, specimens collected 7 days prior or stored at room temp. for more than 24 hours are not acceptable.
