SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Specimen Volume (min) Specimen Type Specimen Container Transport Environment
Preferred See Instructions Swab Flocked Flexible Mini-Tip Nasopharyngeal Swab Ambient / Refrigerated
Alternate 1 3 mL (1) Nasal or Bronchial lavage wash Sterile Screwtop Container Ambient / Refrigerated
Instructions Test sensitivity is optimal with minimally diluted specimens. Therefore, the preferred specimens are a mini-tip nylon flocked swab in 1mL UTM (item 406C from Materials Management) or a saline nasopharyngeal aspirate/wash with the minimal amount of saline required. Also acceptable: nylon flocked swab in M4, M6, or liquid amies (eSwab). All of the above specimen types have a 24 hour stability at 2°-8°C or 25°C.
Rapid RSV testing is approved for patients <19 years of age.
Note: The 1mL UTM provides a concentrated specimen for rapid antigen testing, however, this volume may not be appropriate for some other types of testing. If multiple tests will be ordered from this specimen, please collect additional specimen(s) in 3mL UTM when appropriate.
